May Alpine Newsletter

May Alpine Newsletter

April continued to be a very active month for the Alpine Program! We had U14 & U16s at Snow Cup at Snowbird for their last chance to compete in the IMD for the 24-25 season. We had FIS racing at Vail, Aspen, Winter Park, Palisades, Alpine Meadows & Sun Peaks late into April! The U14’s traveled to Mammoth, CA for U14 Regionals, the U16’s had a stacked spring with Regionals at Schweitzer, Nationals at Sugarloaf, ME and Whistler Cup! Thank you coaches for the continued hard work and dedication to our athletes! We know the season is long and you work crazy hours to provide a space for our local athletes to reach their best!

Now that we are moving into May we are prepping for Mt. Hood camps that JHSC. We will also have leadership members attending US Ski and Snowboard Congress in Park City to discuss new rule proposals and how to make the sport better for all. Kristin and Sean will be attending the IMD Alpine Competition Committee meeting at the end of May to discuss IMD specific proposals and the IMD calendar for the 2024-2025 season. During May & June we try to secure our major staffing positions for the coming season as well! May might seem like a down time for the club, but it never quite slows down!

Athlete Spotlight

We had many athletes that we could spotlight from stand out performances this past year. One athlete we would like to share their accomplishments with is Taryn Moe! She qualified for Whistler Cup by performing well at U16 Nationals that took place at Sugarloaf, Maine under extremely difficult conditions. One would call it Zambonii quality ice. Competing at the Whistler Cup is a leave of ski racing that many athletes dream about and rarely get the opportunity. It is an international competition that over 20 countries attend in the U14 & U16 age groups. She raced in all three disciplines finishing within the top 5 in all three and coming out on the top step in the Giant Slalom! Winning the Whistler Cup as a U16 is a next level accomplishment! We are incredibly proud of Taryn, this victory will get her name on the map even more than it was before and will qualify her to elite camps and possibly get equipment sponsorships.

What’s New in the Alpine Program?

 Development FIS Program:

The purpose of this pathway is to offer U18 athletes a valuable opportunity to progress towards a more competitive FIS track, should they choose, while prioritizing their development. This pathway provides athletes with additional time to assess which direction will best support their skiing goals, enabling them to make informed decisions about their future. By offering the chance to compete at a higher level until high school completion, student-athletes can balance academics with athletics, minimizing travel time and allowing for greater focus on their studies. Additionally, this pathway offers guidance to different options for skiing in college.

Appreciation Corner

Volunteers: As many of you know from countless hours volunteered yourself, we as a club run 25- 40 days of races each winter. We would not be able to do this for our athletes and community without thousands of work and volunteer hours. The effort each and every one of you gave the club over the last 4 months was tremendous but there are a few that went above and beyond! I must give a shoutout to a few individuals!

Parents: A special thank you to the parents! You are the silent champions behind the scenes. Your sacrifices and commitment are essential to the success of our program. Thank you!

Coaches: A massive thank you to our incredible coaching staff. This season, Alpine was fortunate enough to have 47 amazing coaches, the most we’ve ever had. With such a large and talented team, we were able to lower the athlete-to-coach ratio, providing a more personalized, safer, and ultimately more successful program for everyone involved. Your expertise, enthusiasm, and unwavering support make all the difference.

Leadership Staff: Ali Sehnert, Julie Klomparens, Laura Paul & Jesse Knori, wow what would we do without you all! These four women make the club run from behind the scenes and the truly the hardest working people I’ve ever met! Thank you for all that you do!

Timing Needs: If there are any parents or community members that have an interest in timing an alpine ski race, please reach out! It is an amazing community in the timing room with a great view and warm temps!
